He was a member of the JROTC Honor Guard, Color Guard, Drill Team, Physical Fitness Team, Academic Team, and Orienteering Team. He was the recipient of the first PCHS JROTC Career and Technical Education Award. During his high school years, Dean worked at Steak-n-Shake in Pekin for several years. He enjoyed playing video games and paintballing. Sergeant Shaffer has been posthumously awarded the Bronze Star, Purple Heart and the Combat Aviation Badge.
It was a great honor to walk 11 Miles with Army SGT Dean Shaffer. It was still dark when we left this morning and we caught the most beautiful sunrise out on Northside Drive. It was spectacular. We walked over to 127 and then headed towards town. We made a little detour and stopped in at Families Ties for a quick break. We then made a stop in at the Veterans Memorial Park where we read several names on the Memorial Wall of our Fallen Brothers. We then walked over to Miller Ave and then headed back to the house. I want to thank everyone who honked, waved, and saluted in helping me honor this hero. We had 544 honks. It was amazing. I also want to thank SGT Adam Laporte for helping me honor this hero today.
