Today our walk was dedicated in honor of:
Today, I had the honor of walking 5.80 miles with and in memory of Army SPC William J. Rechenmacher, 24, of Jacksonville, Florida.
William Joshua “Josh” Rechenmacher was serving with the 1st Cavalry Division and was assigned to the 1st Brigade Special Troops Battalion at Fort Hood, Texas. He was killed on January 18, 2007, in Baghdad, Iraq, when an improvised explosive device detonated near his Humvee during combat operations. He was only 24 years old. Reports about Josh describe a young man who loved serving his country and who volunteered to return for another tour of duty. His mother remembered his smile and said that he loved what he was doing.
Today, Josh was not forgotten.
Our walk began early this morning when we met a family that was headed to North Carolina. It was great talking with their two boys. One of the things that means so much to me during these walks is having the opportunity to talk with the younger generation and pass along information about what I do and, more importantly, what our Fallen Heroes have done for all of us. Every conversation is an opportunity to make sure another generation understands the meaning of service, sacrifice, and freedom.
Our first stop was at the fire station. From there, we made our way over to Lantana Road and walked down Main Street.
Along the way, we passed the Crossville Military Memorial Museum and continued on to Veterans Memorial Park. There, we stopped at the Memorial Wall and read some of the names of our Fallen Brothers. It is always a powerful moment to stand there, read those names, and remember that behind every name is a life, a family, friends, memories, and a sacrifice that should never be forgotten.
From there, we continued north and turned at the bakery. We then made another stop at Hardee’s, where there is a Memorial Table set up in honor of a Fallen Brother. We took a little break by his table and remembered all the good times.
Then it was time to continue our journey.
Our final stop was at Frost Cemetery, where we visited some more of our Fallen Brothers before making our way back home.
It was a great honor to walk 5.80 miles with Army SPC William J. Rechenmacher today. Josh gave his life while serving our country, but today his name was spoken, his story was shared, and his sacrifice was remembered.
I want to give a special thank-you to PFC Morgan Daly for joining us today and helping honor this American hero.
And, as always, thank you to everyone who honked, waved, and saluted as we made our way through town. Today, we received 326 honks in honor of Army SPC William J. Rechenmacher. Every honk, every wave, and every salute helped show that another Fallen Hero has not been forgotten.
Today, Army SPC William J. Rechenmacher walked with us.
5.80 miles.
326 honks.
One American Hero.
Honor. Respect. Remember. 🇺🇸
We will never forget the sacrifice of William Joshua “Josh” Rechenmacher, a 24-year-old Soldier from Jacksonville, Florida, who gave his life in Baghdad on January 18, 2007.
