Gary, a fireman apprentice, was on leave from the aircraft carrier USS Hancock (CVA19) at Alameda Naval Station, California following its return from a lengthy tour in the Far East and in Southeast Asia and was killed in a fatal car accident near his home. Gary received a Good Conduct Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal.

It was a great honor to walk 5.06 miles wih Navy FN Gary Shiflet. Our walk was close to home today. The weather was perfect, almost 70 deg. We had a great walk. I want to thank everyone who honked, waved, and saluted in helping me honor this hero. We had 259 honks today. It was amazing. I also want to thank Navy GM1 Matthew Austin for helping us honor this hero.
