Gary, a fireman apprentice, was on leave from the aircraft carrier USS Hancock (CVA19) at Alameda Naval Station, California following its return from a lengthy tour in the Far East and in Southeast Asia and was killed in a fatal car accident near his home. Gary received a Good Conduct Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal.
