Today I had the honor of walking in memory of Army Veteran Staff Sergeant Andrew Michael Churchill.
Born on July 13, 1987, at Fort Carson, Colorado, Andrew grew up with a love of learning and a desire to serve something greater than himself. After graduating from Northgate High School, he attended Georgia Military College, where he was recognized among Who’s Who Among American College Students, and later continued his education at the University of North Georgia.
When his country called, Andrew answered.
He served on active duty in the United States Army as a Signal Support Systems Specialist with a Civil Affairs Battalion, deploying to Iraq in support of our nation’s mission. Through his dedication, leadership, and commitment to those beside him, he earned the rank of Staff Sergeant.
After completing his military service, Andrew made his home in Atlanta.
Andrew passed away on July 4, 2016, at just 28 years old. Though his life was far too short, the service he gave to our country will never be forgotten.
Today, every step I take is a reminder that freedom has always come at a cost. It was protected by men and women like Andrew who were willing to stand in harm’s way so the rest of us could live in peace.
Today, I don’t walk alone. I walk with Staff Sergeant Andrew Michael Churchill. His name will be spoken. His service will be remembered. His sacrifice will never be forgotten.
Ot was a great honor to walk 6.41 miles with Army Veteran Andrew M. Churchill. I want to thank everyone who honked, waved, and saluted in helping me honor this hero. We had 328 honks. It was amazing. I also want to thank Navy HT2 Michael Fonseca for helping me honor this hero today.
