Army SPC Mikayla A. Bragg, age 21, of Longview, Washington
Today, we had the honor and privilege of hiking in memory of Army SPC Mikayla A. Bragg, age 21, of Longview, Washington, who passed away on December 21, 2011.
SPC Bragg was assigned to the 201st Brigade Support Battalion, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division at Fort Knox, Kentucky. After graduating from Mark Morris High School in 2008, she chose to serve her country by joining the United States Army. Her goal was to earn money for college and eventually pursue a career helping people or animals—an example of her caring spirit and desire to make a difference in the lives of others.
A dedicated Soldier, SPC Bragg qualified as a rifle sharpshooter and deployed in August as a truck driver in support of her unit’s mission. Though her life was far too short, her courage, commitment, and service continue to inspire us today.
To honor her memory, we hiked 2.51 miles on a section of the beautiful Cumberland Trail. As we walked, surrounded by the incredible views and peaceful beauty of nature, we reflected on the sacrifices made by Mikayla and so many other brave men and women who have worn our nation’s uniform. Every step was taken with gratitude, respect, and remembrance.
I would like to sincerely thank Candy and Donna for joining me in honoring this American hero. I also want to thank SGT Adam Laporte for hiking with us today and helping ensure that SPC Bragg’s story continues to be remembered.
Our Fallen Heroes are never truly gone as long as we continue to speak their names, share their stories, and honor their sacrifices. Today, we walked for Army SPC Mikayla A. Bragg. Tomorrow, we will continue our mission to honor others who gave so much.
Army SPC Mikayla A. Bragg will never be forgotten.
