Today our walk was dedicated in honor of:
Army Capt. Joshua T. Byers, Age 29 of Sparks, NV.
KIA Jul. 23, 2003 Operation Iraqi Freedom
Capt. Byers was assigned to Headquarters, Headquarters Troop, 2nd Battalion, 3rd Armored Calvary Regiment, in Fort Carson, CO.
Capt. Byers was killed in action when his convoy hit an explosive device east of Baghdad.
He was a graduate of Reed High School in Sparks, NV., The United States Military Academy at West Point, class of 1996, and the University of Missouri, with a master of science in engineering management. He was a member of Heart of the Springs Church in Colorado Springs, Colo. He was a captain in the military, serving as company commander of Fox Troop, 2/3 ACR, Fort Carson, Colo. He completed air assault, airborne, and ranger training, and served at Fort Stewart, Ga., Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., and Fort Carson, Colo., and an accomplished soldier, an admired officer, a warm-hearted funny friend. Byers received the Bronze Star Medal with V device, for Valor, and the Purple Heart for being wounded in Iraq.
He is survived by his wife, parents, two brothers, grandmother.
We had a great 7.20 Mile walk this morning. What a beautiful day to be outdoors. Our first stop was to visit some of our Fallen Brothers in the Frost Cemetery. We then walked by the Army National Guard Armory as we headed to the 9/11 Memorial. After visiting the 9/11 Memorial we headed down main street and stopped in at the War Memorial Park where we read some names on the Memorial Wall. After visiting with a couple of people out walking and telling them about Capt. Byers story we walked past TCAT as we headed back to the house. As we were walking by Holiday Hills Lake we got to watch a couple of geese. It is always nice to see wildlife as they were out enjoying this beautiful weather.
I want to thank everyone who honked, waved, and saluted in helping me honor this hero. We had 224 honks today. It was amazing. Thank you.
